Mittenwald, Germany: coffee with a view

This past Friday, I had a video shoot in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. I was traveling by train from Bern, Switzerland, but an unseasonably early snow storm brought down trees all along the tracks in the Austrian and German Alps, so from Innsbruck on there were only buses, and many delays. In the end, this was a fortuitious development because I was able to spend some time in Mittenwald, Germany, both on the way to Garmisch and back. Mittenwald is known for it’s violin-makers, and is an incredibly beautiful Alpine town. The little cafe at the train station was a special treat, with friendly service, great food, and a variety of local beers. Put this little town on your “bucket list.”

She didn’t speak any English…und mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut…but her friends did. After they explained to her that I wanted to photograph her tattoo, she was very enthusiastic about posing for this picture. Afterwards, we all had a lengthy discussion about German food.

An important part of the International School of Berne’s curriculum and culture is the development of a sense of global citizenship in their students. In this post, we hear from 12th grade student Nathalie Rahlenbeck,
who provides an excellent account of her participation in the Terre des Hommes event to raise awareness and funds for an organization that improves the lives of street children. We also feature Dr. Kathleen Noreisch, director of the CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) program at ISBerne. CAS provides the opportunity for students to work on a variety of social responsibility initiatives including Mary’s Meals, an international movement that provides food projects in communities where hunger and poverty impair the ability to receive an education, and Velos für Afrika, a Swiss organization that repairs and sends bicycles to Africa to promote local mobility. The ISBerne CAS program also allows students to work on some very ambitious field projects in the…
