Arabesq: world’s most interesting coffee store/ Dubai Mall, United Arab Emirates

IMG_0918IMG_0919Technically more of a sweets shop than a coffee store, it nonetheless is kind of a fantasy place for coffee affectionados. They hand-infuse pistachios into their ice cream, sell sweets from all over the Arab region, and make coffee in the Arabic-style…similar to the Turkish brewing method. I bought some Syrian baklava and Moroccan cookies. Pretty much the entire first floor of this mall, which has access to the Burj Khalifa, is a series of gourmet shops.

The Girl with the Rose Tattoo/ Al Mamzar Beach, United Arab Emirates

tatoo

This lady from Berlin graciously allowed me to photograph her ornate tattoo. She didn’t speak any English…und mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut…but her friends did. After they explained to her that I wanted to photograph her tattoo, she was very enthusiastic about posing for this picture. Afterwards, we all had a lengthy discussion about German food.

São Paulo is the largest city in the Americas. It has one of the highest number of roof-top helicopter pads in the world.

Also, by far, the best coffee shops in the world.

An important part of the International School of Berne’s curriculum and culture is the development of a sense of global citizenship in their students. In this post, we hear from 12th grade student Nathalie Rahlenbeck, IMG_1658who provides an excellent account of her participation in the Terre des Hommes event to raise awareness and funds for an organization that improves the lives of street children. We also feature Dr. Kathleen Noreisch, director of the CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) program at ISBerne. CAS provides the opportunity for students to work on a variety of social responsibility initiatives including Mary’s Meals, an international movement that provides food projects in communities where hunger and poverty impair the ability to receive an education, and Velos für Afrika, a Swiss organization that repairs and sends bicycles to Africa to promote local mobility. The ISBerne CAS program also allows students to work on some very ambitious field projects in the…

Swiss artist, Paul Klee, was quoted as saying, “”Kunst gibt nicht das Sichtbare wieder, sondern macht sichtbar” or in English, “Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see.”

In this post, we interview ISBerne Secondary School Art Teacher, Mr Tom Sunthornwat, and watch his students work in the newly outfitted Art studio.  11th and 12th Grade students at ISBerne have the opportunity to choose IB Art, requiring them to spend 2 years preparing for a solo art show for the examination.
